RICHMOND, Va. -- A pivotal stretch for Washington Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland hasn't started the way he, or anyone, would hope. He's entering the final year of his contract; he'd like to get another one in Washington. And, if not here, then elsewhere.
It's not that Breeland is only making bad plays. Kirk Cousins Jerseys Yes, he's been beaten -- and sometimes too often. Sometimes he's overaggressive in one-on-one situations. There also have been good breakups, praise for run support and signs of the sort of player Washington hopes he can still become.
But Breeland also remains an emotional player. Ryan Kerrigan Jerseys He can be fun-loving; at times he always seems to be smiling and in a good mood, someone who says he's not worried about how others perceive him. Sean Taylor Jerseys He joked the other day about no longer being the fan favorite. However, he's also the same player who gets into Twitter beefs with fans and who was bothered by how one writer perceived coach Jay Gruden's comments -- or, rather, his pause before saying he was having a "good camp" -- Sunday.
Cornerback is a tough spot to play. As any great one will tell you, players must have a short memory at this position and maintain a high level of confidence. Otherwise, it can eat you up. Breeland has the skill; he just can't waste energy worrying about perceptions or stories or fans comments. DeSean Jackson Jerseys Gruden always talks about quarterbacks needing thick skin; so does any player whose mistakes are always so visible.
Cornerback Champ Bailey once played a great game against the New York Giants, forcing the quarterback to look the other way on probably 10 plays because of his coverage. He was beat once. Fans were mad about it, but Bailey knew he had played a terrific game and that he will lose on occasion. John Riggins Jerseys He moved on. He'll be in the Hall of Fame one day.
Against Pittsburgh last year, Breeland was inches from making a terrific play against Antonio Brown in the end zone (after failing to get the safety help he was supposed to have). But a perfect fourth-down pass to one of the NFL's best receivers resulted in a touchdown. Breeland's fault? Hardly. But even Breeland will admit that last season featured more inconsistency than he'd like.
